Better Things on FX AND a GIVEAWAY!!

UPDATE:

ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF THE BETTER THINGS SWAG GIVEAWAY:

KATHERINE COBB!!

CONGRATULATIONS KATHERINE!!

Hey Snarklings, have you heard of the new show on FX called Better Things?  I watched the pilot episode last Thursday and aside from the fact that the main character Sam (played to perfection by Pamela Adlon) is a part-time porn star, I can totally relate to almost everything else that she deals with. While she has 3 daughters and I have 2, what she deals with is so relatable. That's probably the best word to describe the show: relatable.

Better Things on FX

As the pilot opens, her youngest is throwing a fake tantrum because she isn't getting her way. Been there, dealt with that. Then she deals with her teenager and the full-on attitude that comes with the teen years. Um, hello? Is there a TV camera hidden in my car?? Her middle child is a bit of an enigma. I haven't figured her out yet except for the fact the she barges into her mom's room despite Sam's repeated warnings to NOT come into her room. Who among us with kids EVER HAS PRIVACY? Again: relatable.

Better Things on FX

So far, after watching the pilot episode, I feel for Sam as a single mom. She wants the best for her daughters but while our children ARE our world, there has to be more, right? Is it wrong of us to want some alone time? Is it wrong to want a connection to more than just what our kids need? No, it's not. We love our kids but we deserve adult interaction, we NEED it. And so far, Sam needs it and I can totally relate to her. I'm looking forward to this week's episode to see what happens next. You can watch Better Things on FX on Thursday nights at 10:00 pm EST. But be warned, Better Things is for mature audiences only. Did I mention the main character is a part-time porn star? Yeah, no kids watching, please.

  1. Overwhelmed by everything! Work, munchkin, home, husband... balance?! Hah, what a load of bs...

  2. I get overwhelmed when we have too much planned for one day multiple days in a row. The kids do to. When they get overwhelmed their behavior gets shitty and then I get pissy and we fall apart. It's no fun. I need to tune into this show. If you like it-I know I will!

  3. Wouldn't it be easier to list what doesn't overwhelm me? Right now, the never ending dog hair is aggravating me. I can vacuum up a whole new animal and an hour later there's another one floating around mating with the dustbunnies.

  4. overwhelmed? Responsibilities. Can't someone else get MY dog to go out for a pee? How come I have to decide what everyone else eats for dinner? Half the time I don't want to make food, much less cook, indoors or out. Or just tell me when we run out of anything. What's the point of telling me AFTER I went to the store?

  6. What overwhelms me? Depends on the day! Today, it's:
    Laundry
Dinner. I don't mind the cooking, it's the planning. Why do these people need to eat every damn day?

  8. I don't have kids, but being single means ya have to do everything yourself (I know, I know a lot of times moms have this problem, too). Anyway, I mostly get overwhelmed by domestic duties like laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. Sometimes I wish I could hire people do this stuff so that I could have more "me" time. A girl can dream!

  10. Looks so good!! Can totally relate, too (well, except for the part-time porn star --nobody want to see me with that job! LOL)

  11. So many things! Lately, it's planning my son's bar mitzvah, which is in 2 months. Not so much the event itself, but family and ex-MIL drama around said event. I'm on the verge of requiring certain key people to take a Xanax before they're allowed into the party.

  12. Putting the laundry away is what overwhelms me! I don't mind the washing it's the actual putting away that I HATE

  13. My kids are grown & have lives of their own now but, once upon a time, I was a single mother raising 3 girls & 1 boy (he is the youngest). Just being a single parent was overwhelming in of itself. All those decisions 2 people made, you make by yourself. And forget any "personal" time. It's amazing how many "life threatening" events happen at 2AM.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Those events make those "peed the bed at 2:00 am" look better and better, don't they?

  14. What overwhelms me is the 40 places my girls need to be at.....all at the same time!! Lol. It's a never-ending battle!! Thank God 16 still is driving MY car, to take everyone else to the places they need to be!! Lol

  15. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays I feel overwhelmed cause I have to make sure I am home by 2:15pm (praying all the time I don't hit traffic) to take my son to practice that is 2 hours away. Always hoping the school bus is on time coming home. He gets home at 2:30pm and we have to leave for our adventure by 2:45pm. We get 15 minutes to make sure all baseball equipment is in the car, dinner is with us, and school book bag goes along so he can do his homework while driving up the Turnpike. Unfortunately baseball is year around but I guess the good thing is I only have 3 years left. PS Thank you for suggesting the show - will check it out.

  17. I'm overwhelmed when I realize that, after a full day of work and the ex is out of town, that soccer practices and scout meeting nights (2 different places/2 different kids) are all up to me with an extra kid in tow, and I come home late to a dirty kitchen and laundry that needs to be done.

  18. Overwhelmed by the "collectors" (translation:packrats) that share my home. Seriously, is it necessary to have 276 Nerf darts in the arsenal? Do we really need to store the end tables that we bought at a yard sale circa 1992 so that "the kids can have them when (ahem, if..who will take him in with 276 Nerf darts?) they move out?" Are those loved (obliterated) copies of "Captain Underpants" buried in the depths of the closet (under mounds of turf turds) really going to be cherished by your own children in 15 years? No. The answer to ALL OF THE ABOVE is NO. So yes I'm overwhelmed and could really use some wine. A goody bag would be great too. And some trash bags. Lots and lots of those please!

  19. Im overwhelmed too often! It wouldnt be because IM a procrastinator would it??!!

  20. Continuing to raise my (24 yr old) grandson who is socially and emotionally delayed, and his (20 yr old) girlfriend who moved in about six months ago, and is even more delayed than he is, is stressing me to the max. My social security and pension barely cover monthly expenses, and though my grandson works, he works at Walmart. Enough said?

  21. I'm overwhelmed by a lot these days, but what overwhelms me the most is the fear of not having enough money to survive on each week. The cost of living is making it so hard to live.

  31. I'm overwhelmed by all these comments. LOL It's great to see so many people reading your blog and the show sounds cool. I don't often try watching a lot of new shows because there are just so dang many and I need to get roped into another one like I need another toddler. I love being on the flip side of motherhood right now...my kids are older, either in college or beyond and so rarely do I feel aggravated by them. My middle son just got married. Talk about overwhelming...in a good way. It was a huge milestone — beautiful, unique and full of happy oozy good feelings!

  39. The fact that Yaweh or Jesus or Janet Yellen put only 24 hours in a day, that's what overwhelms me. How am I supposed to get in all my legit work, my blog work, get the kids to training, drive up the mountain to see the oldest play, and sufficiently swoon over Connie Britton on Friday Night Lights - and get a solid six hours sleep?

  40. I don't have kids, but I'm overwhelmed by working 2 jobs & going to college (2nd time around for me). I now stay up (very) late on weeknights but fall asleep early on weekends. What the hell is that??? Oh, & I just love hearing from my teenage employees (who work 4 hours per week) how tired they are & how they "don't have time to do anything fun." Um, excuse me?? These kids are in trouble when they have to start adulting...

Dealing with a job that is less-than-satisfying, meal planning for a family member with health issues, doing household stuff that I HATE to do (cleaning, laundry, etc) with little assistance but when I ask about getting paid help it's a loud NO. And not having time to spend doing the things I love to do. The joy of STRESS! :-/
