12-year old daughter. REAL tattoo. Not a fake tattoo. Not one that scrubs off with some rubbing alcohol. A REAL. FREAKING. TATTOO. On a 12-year old girl.
My head is spinning. The charge: Tattooing a person under the age of 18. Her defense: "My child, my right."
Dear Lord, WTF???
There are things that I let my children get away with, and there are things that just make me look at my kids and go "NO FLIPPING WAY, JOSE". My 16 had expressed interest in a belly-button piercing. She hasn't outright asked, but she's mentioned it. My response? Not gonna happen. Turn 18 and want to do that? Fine by me, but don't come crying to me when it gets infected and it hurts. But under my roof while your under 18? Sorry, Charlie. The answer is no.
What do you think about this? Would you allow your 12 year old child to get a tattoo? Even if he or she said please?

ReplyDeleteOMG! This is ridiculous. The tattoo shop should be in some trouble too. They should have laws against them being allowed to tattoo someone under 18 even with parental consent.

DeleteNever ever, ever. Oh hell no!! We are in our forties, and neither of us have any either. Have some class, and don't let your kids make permanent, unnecessary decisions before they're mentally and emotionally ready.

DeleteKnow what I think? I think we are all a little too worried about our "rights." Here's a wake up call people- Just because you HAVE the right, doesn't mean what you are doing IS right. See the difference? Yes, you HAVE the right to do what you want with your kid (actually you don't, that's why there are laws, moron!) but IS what you are doing with your kid right? Does a 12 year old child have any idea about what permanency even means? NO! Is a 12 year old even developmentally capable of feeling or experiencing anything that is worth permanently altering your body? Yes, of course some have and I don't mean to belittle young adolescents and their experience. But this is forever people! For-ev-er! I have several tattos and never regretted a single one of them- not even the one I got at the ripe old age of 18. But I was not 12. Not even close. You might HAVE the right but that's doesn't meane your decision IS right.

DeleteI'm imagining what that tattoo will look like in a few years, after the kid grows about a foot. Apparently it's heart-shaped. Well, at least a stretched-out heart will be less embarrassing at age 22 or, uh, 45 than a stretched-out "I Love Justin Bieber."

ReplyDeleteYou're right! And after some digging, I found that this is the SECOND case in 2 years of a momma tattooing her kid!! The first kid in 2012 was 11 years old. CRAZY!!

Just because you gave birth to them doesn't give you the right to abuse them (and I'm sorry, in my book this constitutes abuse - or neglect (of good sense) at least.) Ear piercing is the limit before 18 in my house. You want to show your individuality? Do it through your clothes and, in my case as a youth, through your hair. My mom let me do pretty much what I wanted with my hair (within reason, I think - I don't think she would have been on board with fully shaved head) because in her view, it wasn't permanent. It grew back, it came back to its natural color. And, it was better than me doing drugs. A tattoo at 12? Never, no way. My 12 year old would think this was crazy!

DeleteI have 2 tattoos. One is a dolphin in my ankle and my 4 yr old used to point at it and yell "fish!" Tattoo was I e of her first words. She asked if she could have a tattoo and I told her when she was 18 she could so as she pleased but until then she could just look at mine.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if there was maybe some kind of sentimental or symbolic meaning behind the tattoo? Like, maybe the image was important to them for some reason? Death of a friend or relative, something like that. Not saing I'd let my underage daughter get a tat any time soon, but maybe we don't know the whole story. A friend of mine lost her father when she was 16 and got inked in memory of them with a favorite quote they shared. I like to think there was a reasoning behind it. But... Even if there was NO reason, I still don't think a tattoo alone is reason to automatically assume bad parenting. Different strokes, ya know?

ReplyDeleteI don't flipping get some people. We were at the mall the other day and we heard this ongoing shrieking. Found out it was a two year old whose mother was making her get her ears pierced. The poor kid screamed and cried for like 15 minutes, but the mother was adamant. She needed a throat punch.
ReplyDeleteYea, no, I would not let my 12 year old get a tattoo or piercing. I agree, when they are 18 I can't do much about it, but I will let them know my feelings! My sister-in-law is a doctor and she handled this really well. When her kids were in their late teens and wanted piercings and tattoo's she would leave medical books out with pictures of horribly infected things gone wrong. To my knowledge they still have never done anything and they are both in their twenties! Lol!
