Back to the juke box, it was awesome and had all the day's hits. But because John had a huge crush on Anna (who was going out with Chuck), we were never allowed to play Toto's Rosanna. Why? Because ANNA, duh!

That year there was a huge party at Marie's. HUGE. Party of the Century! All the cool kids were going. Except for me. I went to Philly that weekend to visit my brother and sister-in-law. That Saturday night I went roller skating with my sister-in-law's sister. While we were skating to Dexy's Midnight Runner's Come on Eileen, the cops were breaking up the party. Everyone I knew was grounded. Except me, because I was roller skating. Does anyone roller skate anymore? I would imagine it's dangerous, skating and texting. Don't text and skate, kids! You could hit a wall and break your iPhone.
I think that year I wanted desperately to learn the dance to Michael Jackson's Beat It, but sadly, I was a white girl and could only do the white girl dance. Swing those hips, snap those fingers. You know the dance. That was back when Michael Jackson was still a black man, before he turned into a white woman. Ahhh those were the days. That was when I DIDN'T hate Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf. At this point, you're saying to yourself, 'why no link to THAT song'?? Because I hate that song. I've only heard that song about sixty-bajillion times. Apparently radio folks think that's the only song Duran Duran ever did, so that's all they play. How about Is There Something I Should Know? You're about as easy as a nuclear war. I freaking LOVED that one. But no, that wolf song got all the airplay. Blah.
Well, so much for that little stroll down memory lane. Time to get out of 1983 and come back to 2014. Time for me to get ready for work. Just wondered if you were ever transported back by one song. One single song that brought back dozens of memories and hundreds of smiles.

I look like a crazy person right now- I broke out in song to every one of your mentions! I wasn't allowed to play Prince in my house so I lived to belt out the lyrics in the privacy of my best friend's house.

Delete"Melt With You" by Modern English. I loved the movie "Valley Girl" and Nicholas Cage was sooooooooo adorable!!!! The other big one was the Purple Rain soundtrack. My sister had a convertible Fiat Spider 2000 and we would cruise C-bus and I thought I was the coolest kid with one hell of an older sister!!!! Ahhhh - those were the days!!!!

DeleteBEAT IT!!!!!! That entire album takes me back to my Smurf sleeping bag, on the floor of my parents' dining room, ear up against their big ass stereo speakers that were taller than me. I fell asleep to that album every Friday night. Some kids wanted to roller skate; other kids just wanted a little MJ :)

I remember that song, "Blinded by the Light" but can't remember who did it. I just know I heard my mom yell puh-lenty of times, "TURN THAT DOWN RIGHT NOW!"
She hated it.
As she should have after hearing it 412 times in one day.
The version of Blinded by the Light that I loved was Manfred Mann's version, my husband loves the Springsteen version. Big bone of contention in my house.

ReplyDeleteBack in high school I had a "portable tape player" with those huge headphones and I would listen to my jams when I walked to the bus stop.
Even back then I was crazy about all things Horror and really into Romero, so of course I loved that song, and I'd play it at least twice on the walk. :)
"Hungry Like a Wolf" always makes me think of that Farrah Faccewt movie "Small Sacrifices". If you haven't seen it- the movie was about Diane Downs, the woman who shot her children because her boyfriend didn't want kids.
In one scene from the movie where she is standing trial for murder, Farrah, as Diane, is tapping her pen to that song and singing away, totally uncaring that she killed her kids. The song was playing in the car when she shot them, and she sings along to it in the courtroom totally without remorse.
And so I hate that song, too.
Wow I just wrote a novel.
Starr, I actually JUST found out that HLTW was what she was listening to when she killed her kids. Another reason to hate that song.
DeleteSo many songs take me back to the 80's! I was and am still a metal head. MTV, Hair Metal, Beavis & Butthead, Concerts, Mixtapes, the Club Scene, and the whole decade was so much fun.

DeleteI have too many! We are always listening to 80's on 8 or 90's on 9 in the car. I just feel like in a way, music died after the 90's.
ReplyDeleteMy 8 year old prefers 80's songs. One day, she was giggling and running behind me in Target. She was humming a song and it took me a minute to place it. It was the opening bars to "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors.
LOVE that she's embracing my music.
