I read a blog a few weeks ago (I apologize, I cannot remember whose blog it was) about a 16 year old girl who was sexually assaulted, then criticized for Tweeting the names of the creeps that did this to her when they were found guilty, but since they were minors, their names were not made public. I thought, you know what? Those asshats deserve to have their names made public for what they did to her. KNOWINGLY did to her. While she was passed out. Now, she's not completely innocent in the grand scheme of things. She's 17 (16 at the time of the assault) and was participating in underage drinking, but because she over-indulged and passed out, did that give ANYONE the right to sexually assault her, take pictures of her and post said pictures on the internet? I don't fucking think so.
Now she is being held in contempt of court for Tweeting the names of her attackers. According to this article from the Huffington Post, she's being threatened with jail time for making the names of those scumnuggets public. I'm sorry but boo-fucking-hoo for them. Here's a quote from one of the attacker's lawyers:
"He's had to move," David Mejia,
the attorney for one of the attackers, told The Huffington Post. "He
has lost all the potential that was there. He was attending high school
and was kicked out. He was on course to a scholarship to an Ivy League
school to play sports and that may be jeopardized. He's in therapy. He's
just overwhelmed and devastated by what started from the conduct of
this young girl saying false things as she did."
Mejia filed a contempt motion against Dietrich in July. She had
tweeted the names of two teenage boys who assaulted her back in August
2011.
After naming the boys, Dietrich, then 16, tweeted, "I'm not protecting anyone that made my life a living Hell."
Now keep this in mind. In June, these boys confessed to felony sexual abuse and misdemeanor voyeurism. They CONFESSED to felony sexual abuse. Whether or not it was 'legitimate' rape, penetration or not, they CONFESSED to felony sexual abuse. They CONFESSED to criminal sexual abuse or touching, according to the Huffington Post article. If criminal sexual abuse is this year's charge and they get away with it because they are minors, what's to stop them next time from following through with actual 'legitimate' rape?
Excuse me for just a moment for my forthcoming tirade.
Are you kidding me? One of the boys is trying to hold HER in contempt of court because HE touched her inappropriately while she was passed out??????? He was on course to attend an Ivy League school to play sports and that may be jeopardized??? HE'S in therapy??? SHE ruined HIS life?? Are you fucking kidding me??????? There aren't enough "are you fucking kidding me's" for me to wrap my head around this.
The boy's lawyer was hoping she would show remorse or offer an apology? What???? I'm sorry I Tweeted your name announcing to the world that you're a pervert who sexually assaulted me??? Is that a good enough apology? That boy doesn't deserve an apology, he deserves to be put in jail where he becomes the bitch of a 300 pound inmate named Tiny, and gets traded around the cell block for a pack of smokes. Daily.
I'm sorry if anyone is offended by this, but in my opinion, these boys, minors or not, KNEW what they were doing and deserve what they get. Savannah's only mistake, in my opinion, was underage drinking to the point of passing out. She deserved to get in trouble at the hands of her parents, she deserved the hangover she probably suffered, but she did absolutely NOT deserve to be sexually assaulted. NO one deserves that. Except the jackasses who did this to her. Sadly, they will not serve one minute in jail. They may have their future at an Ivy League college put in jeopardy. Isn't that a shame?
I am right there with you. The SAME thing happened to me when I was 16. Got drunk, passed out, and then sexually assaulted. I never faced my attacker in court (told that because there was no "evidence" that I would basically be dragged through the mud and then the guy would get off - I also didn't lead a spotless life, so I figured it was best for everyone but him if I stayed silent). You know what? GOOD FOR HER! I hope this asshat loses everything because of what he did. I'm sorry, but I think the fact that minors can do something like this, and then have it expunged from their records just because they happened to not hit that magical "adult" age (give me a fucking break, what 18 year old actually acts like an adult???) before they committed the crime??
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm sorry for what you went through. And you're right, they did the crime, that should stay on their record and NOT be magically erased when they hit 'adulthood'.

I don't know... the older I get, the more I lose faith in humanity.
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad isn't it, T?

Oh, wah wah wah. His life has been affected by her tweet. WHAT does he think HE did to HER life, FFS???
ReplyDeleteExactly.

I was raped when I went to go buy drugs. It was horrible. I never reported it because what was I going to tell the cops, "I just got raped when I went to buy weed?" The man, who was admittedly my ex-boyfriend, was totally high on something insane, and as I was screaming for help the people in the next room ignored me and he told me if I yelled one more time he would BITE MY NOSE OFF, which I had no doubt he had the ability to do. Afterwards, he walked me to my car and wanted to know if I would kiss him good bye. She's lucky she gets the chance to do this, and has the balls to do so. There should be no punishment for her, and please, I am oh so sorry those fuckwads had their lives messed up. Yeah, she made some poor choices, as did I, but no one deserves to be attacked. Love your blog, Mrs. Beatle!
ReplyDeleteBeth, I'm sorry that this happened but I'm truly glad he didn't bite off your nose. THAT would make it hard for you to enjoy all that swimming you're doing.
DeleteYou are 100% right in that NO one deserves to be attacked.
Thanks for reading, Mrs. Devo.

The world is flipping an insane place. THere is no decency, or common sense left. I believe in an eye for an eye. They got off easy in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad, isn't it, Stef? I agree, they DID get off easy.

I read this the other day..so asinine!! My heart bleeds for those poor little boys who made such a little mistake..hahhah!!! Of course,I'm not truthin'ya!!!! They deserve to be humiliated and punished! If I was that girls parents, the whole world would have known who and what they did! I've been known to have a big mouth like that! *sigh*...the world we live in...
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Nina. I've got a big mouth and given those circumstances, would NOT be afraid to use it. Those boys deserve their names being made public. Will it hurt their future? I guess they should've thought about that BEFORE putting their hands on her.
DeleteTeri
Wow, I feel for those poor, mistreated, maligned decent young men. WhatEVER. I think billboards should be posted in their city with "I'm a rapist" above photos of their faces! Thanks for a great post!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, are they going to have to register as sex offenders? I never saw anything about that when I read the story.
I don't think so because they are minors and once they hit 18 their records would either be sealed or expunged. This is purely a guess on my part, I don't have any handle on the law but given the fact that they are juvenile offenders, they probably wouldn't have to register as sex offenders.
DeleteThanks for reading!!
Teri
I read the story when it broke a couple of weeks ago, and the contempt motion filed by the boy's lawyer has since been dropped, and that poor girl won't be facing any jail time for Tweeted those douche bags names..... Good for her for putting their names out there, and boo fucking hoo that their lived have been turned upside down ever since.

Snarkalicious, you know stories like this just boil my blood. As a PLITA (person living in the aftermath. I hate victim and survivor just sounds weird to associate myself with), I hurt for this girl. But I applaud her. Not very many women will stand up and say "these people did this to me" so not only did she have charges filed but then she released their names. That's two acts of complete, unabashed bravery. All from a 16/17 year old girl. I wish I would've had her cajones. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteRazorblade, you're awesome. You're NOT a victim, and this girl should NOT be told to keep quiet. I applaud you both!!
ReplyDeleteTeri
Teri, I am right there with you. First of all how can she be held in contempt of court when SHE wasn't the one on trial. How can the names of her attackers not be allowed to be know to the public. Do we not have the right to know that names of these people to keep our own, Sister, Mothers, Daughters and Friends safe from people like this. I read that article and was totally appalled that her being held in contempt of court was even brought up. It should be part of public record, minors or not. What they did was no act of a minor it was the act of an adult and they should be treated and force to carry the sentence as adults not hide under the pretense that they were minors.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bean! Love the way you think. Always have.
